  • Uncovering the data question and matching it with visualization encoding

Target Audience and Purposes

Guiding Questions

  1. Who are your stakeholders/audience?
  2. What do they need? What question needs to be answered? How do we translate that question into a data question?
  3. What data would be ideal to answer their question?
  4. How do we acquire that data? What data do we have available?
  5. How do we encode variables in our visualization to best answer their question?

Case Study: Common Core of Data – America’s Public Schools

The Data

Explore the data files in the Common Core of Data

Check the Nonfiscal vs Fiscal data provided.

What is the difference between the different levels of data available? (look at files prior to the pandemic for more complete data)

The Audiences – data

For each audience below, what data should we use?

  1. Parents in Arizona trying to decide what school district to move to
  2. Readers of a news story about changes over time related to low-income students across the US
  3. Researchers writing about issues related to diversity, inclusion, and equity in the largest school districts in the US
  4. A startup that developed a new AI conversation app that allows students to ask questions about the content of class, trying to decide what regions in the US they want to target for their marketing

The Audiences – data question

For the dataset you selected for each audience below, what would be the data question? How could you answer that question with the data you have access to?

The Audiences – visualization encoding

For the dataset you selected for each audience and data question you have, how could you encode the different variables to different elements in your visualization?

What type of visualization would you build?

What type of interaction would you include, if any?

What type of multiple views would you include, if any?
